Monrovia—Cllr. Tiawan Gongloe, Political Leader of the Liberian People’s Party, has expressed strong support for U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming November 2024 elections, stating that her presidency would enhance the historical relationship between Liberia and the United States.

During a press conference, Gongloe emphasized the unique bond rooted in Liberia’s founding and its ongoing commitment to democracy and governance.
“We have always looked to the United States as a model, and now, more than ever, we need Kamala Harris to build on that legacy,” he said.
Cllr. Gongloe called on American citizens of Liberian descent to support Harris, despite his own inability to vote as a non-U.S. citizen.
He highlighted the historical ties between Liberia and the U.S., asserting that Harris understands and values this relationship.
He praised Harris as a “beacon of hope and resilience,” noting her commitment to democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.
“At a time of unprecedented global challenges, she is the right choice to lead the U.S. and the world towards a more just and peaceful future,” Cllr. Gongloe stated.
Recalling the role of former President George W. Bush in calling for peace in Liberia during Charles Taylor’s presidency, Cllr. Gongloe noted that Harris possesses similar moral clarity and courage to support African nations in their pursuit of justice.
He asserted that Harris would continue the U.S. tradition of supporting Liberia’s development, recognizing the strategic importance of U.S.-Africa relations and ensuring that smaller nations have a strong voice in global affairs.
Cllr. Gongloe also emphasized Harris’s potential to combat corruption in Africa, stating, “Corruption is a cancer that weakens institutions and stifles economic growth.”
He expressed the belief that her experience as a prosecutor uniquely equips her to tackle this issue, ensuring that U.S. foreign aid promotes transparency and accountability.
On the critical issue of climate change, Cllr. Gongloe commended Harris’s advocacy for environmental justice, stressing the need for U.S. leadership in combating global warming.
He noted that the impacts were already felt in Liberia, such as rising sea levels and unpredictable weather patterns.
Cllr. Gongloe affirmed that Harris’s presidency would prioritize international cooperation on climate issues, benefiting vulnerable nations like Liberia and helping to secure a sustainable future for all.
