Barclayville Gets Long-Awaited Street Project as MPW Begins Work – Global News Network Liberia

Barclayville, Grand Kru County, Liberia – March 10, 2025 – The residents of Barclayville City are celebrating the commencement of a long-awaited street construction and layout project, spearheaded by the Government of Liberia through the Ministry of Public Works (MPW).

County Development Officer, Joe Sekpeh, announced that the project will comprehensively address both existing and non-existent roads, including previously unopened alleyways. The initiative aims to significantly improve traffic flow, stimulate commercial activities, and enhance the freedom of movement for citizens within the city.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, March 10, 2025, Sekpeh revealed that the project is being funded by the County Administration through the County Development Fund, with an initial budget of US$10,000. He acknowledged that the final cost might exceed this estimate and urged the Grand Kru County Legislative Caucus to provide additional support.

Sekpeh expressed gratitude to the national government and the MPW for deploying over five pieces of heavy earthmoving equipment, expected to arrive in Grand Kru on March 22, 2025. This equipment will be crucial for the project’s success, aligning with the government’s ARREST Agenda for infrastructure development.

Grand Kru County, despite being one of Liberia’s oldest counties, has historically lagged in development. The residents of Barclayville have welcomed the decision by the central government and the County Administration to prioritize the layout of principal streets within their city.

Sekpeh reiterated the government’s commitment to the ARREST Agenda and called for balanced reporting, urging critics to acknowledge the progress and deliverables of the Boakai-Koung Administration alongside any perceived shortcomings.

He emphasized that this infrastructure initiative will serve as a strong incentive for development partners to engage with Grand Kru County, noting that the Rural Electrification Agency has already begun installing poles for solar streetlights in Barclayville.

The County Development Officer also commended the City Corporations, Zonal Heads, and residents for their unwavering support since the project’s commencement.
