Boakai Hails Liberia’s UN Security Council Seat As Historic Responsibility

MONROVIA – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has hailed Liberia’s election to the United Nations Security Council as both a profound honor and a serious global responsibility, declaring the country’s return to international prominence. Speaking during a special cabinet meeting on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, President Boakai said, “Liberia is back on the global stage, and Liberia is ready!”

The Executive Mansion, in a press release issued the same day, noted that the President convened the cabinet to both celebrate the nation’s successful bid for a Non-Permanent Seat on the Security Council and to outline a clear strategy for Liberia’s participation during its tenure.

The President expressed his gratitude to Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti, who led the diplomatic effort, as well as members of the Cabinet and other institutions and individuals whose collective work contributed to what he described as a historic national milestone. Boakai emphasized that the achievement must not be symbolic alone but should yield tangible benefits for the country.

“This collective success must translate into visibility, success and benefit for all of us,” Boakai stated. “Our ARREST Agenda, the African Agenda and the global agenda must be pursued.” He called on his administration to deliver results that will ensure Liberia’s term on the Council ends with honor and impact.

Foreign Minister Nyanti, who also serves as Dean of the Cabinet, presented an update on Liberia’s next steps as a non-permanent member of the Security Council. She outlined the Council’s core mandates and assessed the country’s preparedness to actively engage. Her briefing focused on the need for adequate staffing, budgetary support, and the development of a principled and strategic foreign policy to guide Liberia’s contributions to global peace and security.

The cabinet meeting, according to the Executive Mansion, signals the start of a series of high-level consultations and policy actions aimed at ensuring that Liberia’s voice on the Security Council reflects its commitment to peace, stability, and meaningful global cooperation.
