MARYLAND COUNTY, LIBERIA — Hon. Eric Giko, a prominent figure in Maryland County politics and a three-time senatorial candidate, has officially announced his candidacy for the 2029 senatorial elections. His decision comes after a petition from a coalition of local citizens urged him to re-enter the political arena.

The petition, formally presented on August 25, called on Giko to challenge the incumbent, Senator James Biney, who also chairs the Senate Committee on Executive.

During a press briefing on September 15, Giko graciously accepted the petition, stating, “I accept your petition, and I will contest as a senatorial candidate as you have asked me to. This trust you have reposed in me—I will not decline.”

The petitioners, represented by community leader Mr. Cooper, praised Giko as a “son of the soil” and lauded his consistent record of community development. They pointed to his past work on infrastructure projects, donations of medical supplies, and educational scholarships as evidence of his dedication and vision for the county.

“Eric Giko has proven himself to be a dedicated servant leader, consistently engaging with all sectors of our community,” Cooper said. “He understands our challenges and has a vision that resonates with the diverse voices of Maryland County.”

The petition highlighted Giko’s collaborative efforts with local businesses, schools, and civil society groups, as well as his advocacy for economic growth, quality education, healthcare, and environmental sustainability.

In his remarks, Giko remained humble, emphasizing that his acceptance was not a victory declaration but a “declaration of commitment” and a call for unity. He reflected on his previous political campaigns, which included a run for Representative in 2011 and senatorial bids in 2020 and 2023, and shared that he had previously decided against seeking elected office unless called upon by the people.

“You braved the rain and storms on August 25 to call me—now I am ready to serve,” he affirmed. “Not with promises of perfection, but with dedication, transparency, and a deep love for the land we call home.”

Giko outlined his campaign’s key priorities, which include improvements in healthcare, infrastructure, agriculture, education, sanitation, and youth empowerment. He concluded by thanking his supporters and stressing that the work ahead would require collective effort.

“To those who championed this movement, your hope for the future will be built together,” he said. “But let me be clear—I cannot do it alone. We must work hand in hand.”

As the 2029 campaign season gains momentum, Giko’s entry into the race signals what is expected to be a dynamic and closely watched senatorial contest in Maryland County.
