LOUISIANA TOWNSHIP – The Jerusalem Community Women Self-Help Initiative received a significant boost on Saturday, July 19, 2025, when Montserrado County District #1 Representative Hon. Rugie Barry pledged a total of L$100,000 toward the rehabilitation of the community’s deteriorating road.
The announcement was made during a well-attended event marking the anniversary of the women’s wing, which coincided with a fundraising rally and a spirited block competition. Hon. Barry, who graced the occasion as a special guest, presented L$50,000 in cash and promised an additional L$50,000 to support the rehabilitation of the Jerusalem Community road in Fendell, Louisiana Township.
Organizers of the event said that proceeds from the celebration would be dedicated to improving the community’s road, which becomes nearly impassable during the rainy season. The event drew residents, local stakeholders, and prominent figures from surrounding areas, underscoring the community’s commitment to collective action.
In a brief interview, Mrs. Alice T. Johnson, chairlady of the women’s wing, expressed optimism about the success of the initiative, noting that the determination and unity of the women will ensure the project’s completion.
The program began with a lively parade from the community’s main entrance to the program grounds and was marked by music, colorful attire, and an atmosphere of communal pride. Delivering the keynote address, Community Chairman Mr. Jerome L. Kollie praised the women for their vision and continuous contribution to the community’s development.
Hon. Barry, in her remarks, reaffirmed her support for women-led initiatives and emphasized the importance of women’s participation in national development. She linked her efforts to the broader goal of empowering women across the district, revealing that she has directly impacted the lives of more than 2,000 women through various support programs.
She also urged women to abandon a passive role in society and take an active stance in shaping their futures, especially as the 55th National Legislature focuses on raising awareness around inclusive governance, an effort she actively supports.
The program raised just over L$70,000 in donations, excluding pledges and material support, as the community continues to rally around its goal of creating a more accessible and developed environment.
