MONROVIA – The Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) has officially announced that its corporate logo has been registered as a trademark with the Liberia Intellectual Property Office (LIPO), granting the institution exclusive legal rights to its use across all platforms. The registration, effective as of May 6, 2025, is catalogued under Registration No. LR-T-2025-65.
The trademark protection ensures that LEC retains the sole authority to reproduce, distribute, and publicly display its logo through various media, including print, digital, merchandise, and broadcast channels. The corporation emphasized that this legal milestone marks a significant step in safeguarding its brand identity and deterring misuse.
According to the LEC management, the decision to pursue formal trademark registration follows growing concerns over the unauthorized use of its logo by individuals attempting to defraud customers and mislead the public. The entity disclosed that impersonators have been exploiting the LEC logo to spread misinformation and engage in illicit schemes involving unsuspecting customers.
Effective immediately, the LEC warned that any unauthorized reproduction, modification, or distribution of its logo—whether through social media, websites, promotional content, or merchandise—constitutes a direct violation of Liberia’s Trademark Act of 2008, the World Trade Organization’s TRIPS Agreement, and the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property. The corporation stated that such infringements will be prosecuted vigorously under Section 37 of the Trademark Act, which criminalizes willful counterfeiting of registered trademarks and is punishable by fines and/or imprisonment.
LEC is encouraging all individuals and organizations who wish to use its logo for legitimate purposes, such as media reporting, sponsorships, or public education, to formally request approval from its Legal Services Department at the Waterside headquarters in Monrovia. Requests must be submitted in writing and will be reviewed in accordance with the corporation’s Brand Use Guidelines. Approved parties will receive a licensing agreement outlining permissible uses and associated terms.
Meanwhile, the corporation is urging anyone currently using the logo without authorization to cease immediately or face potential legal action.
