Liberia Awaits History as UN Security Council Election Underway | News

Today, Liberia stands on the brink of another defining moment in its storied national journey, as the United Nations General Assembly in New York convenes to elect five new non-permanent members to the Security Council for the 2026–2027 term. Among the candidates are Liberia, Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama, and Somalia — each competing for one of the five highly coveted seats on the world’s foremost body for peace and international security.

For Liberia, this bid is not just about occupying a seat; it is about fulfilling a national destiny. After decades of civil conflict and reconstruction, Liberia now presents itself to the world not as a beneficiary of peacekeeping, but as an architect of peacebuilding — ready to contribute, shape, and lead global security discourse.

President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has called this campaign “a matter of national transformation,” while Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti recently declared, “We are no longer passive recipients of peacekeeping. We want to be critical shapers of peacebuilding in the world.”

Over the last several months, Liberia’s campaign has received overwhelming endorsements from the African Union, ECOWAS, and several individual member states — all recognizing the credibility and experience Liberia brings to the table. As the vote unfolds, hope reverberates through the halls of the United Nations and across Liberia.

This is a moment of pride, of reflection, and of collective resolve. Generations will remember this day as one where Liberia’s voice reached higher, stood taller, and spoke louder in pursuit of peace and justice for all.
