MONROVIA – The opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) has criticized the Boakai administration for what it describes as an exaggerated publicity campaign surrounding President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s invitation to attend an African summit hosted by U.S. President Donald Trump.
On Wednesday, July 2, 2025, CDC figure Isaac Doe described the invitation as routine diplomatic engagement rather than a major achievement, warning against what he called “political hype” being pushed by government supporters.
“President Boakai is among other African Heads of State invited by the Trump administration to attend Trump’s first African Summit. This is great news, but there is one little issue,” Doe stated. “Although this is not an official state visit for President Boakai, it is a good thing that he was included amongst others to attend the summit.”
He argued that past Liberian presidents, including Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and George Weah, received similar invitations but did not use the events as tools of political propaganda.
“President Ellen Sirleaf was invited to attend the same summit. That was not a big propaganda tool for Ellen. President George Weah was invited by President Biden. That was not the biggest propaganda news. We weren’t making Liberians believe that Liberia’s problems were solved,” Doe asserted. “Now here comes the Rescue Mission with ten pounds of lies, and President Trump invites President Boakai. You will hear this at every corner of Liberia.”
Doe said that social media platforms and pro-government radio programs have been flooded with celebratory commentary, presenting the summit invitation as a sign of international validation for the Boakai administration.
“When will the Rescue get serious?” he asked. “You can lie to win, but you cannot lie to govern.”
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti has officially confirmed President Boakai’s inclusion in the upcoming summit. She emphasized that Liberia’s participation presents a strategic opportunity to discuss key issues such as security, the rule of law, and Liberia’s voting record at the United Nations.
