G/Cape Mount- It was a colorful program at the Bea Mountain Mining Corporation’s Camp David compound, when women from all departments of the company gathered to celebrate International Women’s Day.
International Women’s Day, celebrated is celebrated annually on March 8. Basically, a global day recognizing the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women while advocating for gender equality. It’s a time to celebrate progress, raise awareness of ongoing challenges, and drive action toward a more inclusive world. That is why the women of BMMC decided to celebrate this day in a grand syle.
The women were seen in jubilant mood dancing and singing as they called on their male counterparts to at all times see them as partners.
They wore
Comfort Duyan, an excavator operator said she was happy celebrating IWD. She feels accomplished seeing herself in a “men’s field.” She is one of the few women employed by BMMC to operate such heavy yellow machine.
“ I feel very proud doing this job as an excavator operator because it was my ambition years back,” Comfort said with a smile across her face.
Comfort expressed appreciation to BMMC for helping her to live her dream as one of the heavy duty drivers of Liberia working with that international company.
For her part, Ruth Wilson who is a pit miner said, “ I feel very awesome first and foremost for the management because other institutions might not be celebrating today.
It has been her hope of becoming a zoologist knowing that Liberia as a country has lots of resources.
She indicated that it was based on that fact that saw herself becoming a mining geologist.
She has worked in the open pit and underground mines at the BMMC based on her confidence and trust her bosses at the company reposted to her.
Kenneh Kotimah, a female mining engineer who works with the preceding plant at the Company said, “ Today IWD was established for us women to feel that we are very special.”
She stressed, “ I am here to tell all the women that we cannot sit and tell the men to go ahead. Let us try to compete with them. If you can make a move, the opportunity will be given.”
Also, she called on men and institutions to give women equal opportunities as men stating that, “We are here today to tell you that anything men can do, we are capable of doing more than them.”
Chaz Morris, a microbiologist at the water bottling department at the BMMC said she feels happy that women are being celebrated.
“Today is very important to me and all other women around the world” she said with smile.
She said, “ We only want inclusion in every aspect of society. We only want a step that we can fill in, we can come with our multitask abilities, our innovative ideas can come on.
According to her, “Women are so important, if we can manage the homes, what more about the professional arena? what moreabout that people are afraid of”?
International Women’s Day (IWD) has been observed since the early 1900’s – a time of great expansion and turbulence in the industrialized world that saw booming population growth and the rise of radical ideologies.
