MONROVIA – The Liberia National Police (LNP) has announced it will investigate the manner in which opposition figure Janga Kowo, Chairman of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), was apprehended following widespread public concern over the conduct of law enforcement officers during the arrest.
In a statement issued on Monday, June 9, 2025, the LNP confirmed that while the arrest of Mr. Kowo was based on what it described as “probable cause,” he was immediately released upon arrival at the LNP Headquarters. Despite the swift release, the police acknowledged that the method and circumstances surrounding the arrest have triggered significant public attention and concern.
“The Inspector General of Police has directed the Professional Standards Division to review video evidence and other relevant details of the incident,” the statement read. “A thorough inquiry into the use of force will be conducted, and upon completion, the findings will be made public.”
The police have come under criticism from members of the public, rights advocates, and opposition leaders, who described the arrest as heavy-handed and politically motivated, especially amid growing tensions between the ruling establishment and the CDC.
The LNP reiterated its commitment to law and order but also acknowledged the need for transparency and accountability within its ranks. It called on citizens to cooperate with law enforcement and to rely on credible sources of information while investigations are underway.
“The collective commitment of every citizen is essential in maintaining peace and ensuring public safety,” the statement added.
Mr. Kowo has not made any public statement since the incident, but CDC supporters have decried what they term as targeted actions against opposition leaders, fueling fears of political harassment. The outcome of the LNP’s promised investigation is now awaited by a public watching closely amid Liberia’s increasingly charged political climate.
