NIMD Launches First Regional Democracy Education in Buchanan | News

The Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD) has launched its first regional democracy education training in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County from June 4-6, 2025. The regional democracy education targeted thirty (30) emerging young leaders from the formal and informal sectors from Sinoe, Rivercess, Margibi and Grand Bassa Counties.

Representatives of the formal sector included young leaders from political parties based in the counties and leaders of community colleges and youth-led organizations. Those from the informal sector included leaders of commercial unions and petty traders.

The Regional Democracy Education is grounded in issues identified through a nationwide, issue based consultative processes with young people. The key common issues that cut across the 15 counties were identified as teenage pregnancy, livelihood opportunities, and access to education that is tailored to the labour market.

The Regional Democracy Education serves as a catalyst for the development of democratic knowledge, skills, attitudes, and trust-building among individuals from diverse social and political backgrounds. The Regional Democracy School Education further provides a safe and inclusive space for individuals to convene, exchange ideas, and deliberate on the issues mentioned above.

The Regional Democracy Education is a part of the Liberia Electoral Support Project, which aims to promote a more inclusive and accountable democracy in Liberia. The project is managed by UNDP and implemented in partnership with UN Women and the Netherlands Institute for Multi-Party Democracy (NIMD), with support from the European Union, Irish Aid and Embassy of Sweden.
