MONROVIA – The Liberia National Police (LNP) has announced an active investigation into a shooting incident involving its Anti-Robbery Unit that left a civilian wounded during a patrol operation on the night of Friday, July 18, 2025.
According to a police statement issued on Saturday, July 19, and signed by Deputy Commissioner of Police Cecelia G. Clarke, the incident occurred at approximately 9:30 p.m. along Kesselly Boulevard. Officers on routine patrol reportedly attempted to apprehend individuals suspected of engaging in criminal activities using motorbikes. During the operation, one of the suspects allegedly opened fire.
In the ensuing exchange, a civilian, 22-year-old Massa Crawford of Doe Community, sustained a gunshot wound to the right side of her jaw. She was immediately rushed to the JFK Medical Center, where she is currently receiving medical treatment. Authorities say they are coordinating closely with medical personnel to ensure her recovery.
The police have arrested one suspect, who is currently in custody, while the investigation into the circumstances of the shooting continues. The LNP emphasized that the investigation would be impartial and thorough and pledged full accountability should any misconduct or procedural lapses be discovered.
“We understand the gravity of this incident and its impact on the community,” the statement read. “We deeply regret the injury caused to Massa Crawford and her family, and we are working closely with them to provide support during this difficult time.”
The police further assured the public that updates will be provided as the investigation progresses and reaffirmed their commitment to professionalism, integrity, and public safety.
As public concern grows over the safety of civilians during police operations, the LNP reiterated its dedication to transparency and efforts to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
