MONROVIA – ECOWAS has demonstrably been quite a caring organization for one of its founding fathers, the oldest African republic, Liberia. Needless to recount its costly peace and security largess granted the country in the last 25 years. Of particular interest yet again is its restless shuttles to save Liberia’s democracy, as the first branch of government went into war with itself. Obstinacy of the disputing parties, as was the case during the civil war, gave the regional body tough time to negotiate. But finally is all over, and the country’s ranging delegate to the ECOWAS Parliament, Bomi County Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe, has taken so some time to update the august body on the final resolution, as THE ANALYST reports.
Liberia’s ranging representative to the ECOWAS’ Parliament, Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe, has written that regional body through its Speaker, Memounatou Ibrahima, to notify them of the final resolution of legislative impasse and the election of new speaker of the Liberia’s House of Representatives.
In a communication dated May 15, Senator Snowe formally informed members of the Sixth Legislature of the ECOWAS Parliament that the “internal parliamentary impasse at the Honourable House of Representatives of Liberia 55TH National Legislature has been peacefully and lawfully resolved in keeping with the country’s democratic principles and legislative procedures”.
Following the interventions of the Supreme Court of Liberia, and subsequent resignation of former Speaker Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa, he told the ECOWAS Parliament that the House of Representatives convened in regular session and duly conducted an election, resulting in the peaceful ascension of Honourable Richard Nagbe Koon as Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Liberia.
“This development, Your Excellency, does not only restores full constitutional leadership to both Chambers of the Liberian Legislature, but also paves the way for strengthened parliamentary function and representation at the national and regional levels with respect to the framework of the ECOWAS Parliament,” wrote Snowe who is also Senate Chairman on Energy/Hydrocarbon & Environment Committee and Vice-Chair: Internal Affairs, Governance & Reconciliation Committee.
He said the Liberian Legislature remains profoundly grateful for the solidarity support from the ECOWAS Parliament during this period and herewith reaffirm Liberia’s continued commitment consideration to the principles of democratic governance and regional cooperation.
“Thanks, and please accept, Your Excellency, the assurances of my highest esteem and,” the letter concluded.
