MONROVIA – News reaching The Analyst says a number of workers of the Chinese business has begun enjoying favorable work environment, including receipt of their long denied benefits as a result of the intervention of a Liberian grassroots advocacy organization, the Solidarity & Trust for a New Day (STAND).
Recently, STAND intervened in allegations of unfair labor practices at the newly built Chinese-owned Platinum International Hotel (PIH) in Congo Town.
Through STAND’s efforts, the Ministry of Labor granted relief to the affected workers, leading to an agreement by PIH to meet its obligations, including, paying all outstanding overtime and holiday wages owed to contractors, compensating affected workers for their Sunday labor and reinstating all dismissed workers.
Other relief accrued as a result of STAND’s intervention are ending all forms of workplace discrimination and complying with Liberia’s labor laws moving forward.
STAND thanked the Ministry of Labor for taking decisive action on behalf of the aggrieved workers.
“This victory reaffirms STAND’s commitment to defending labor rights and sends a strong message to exploitative companies that labor violations in Liberia will not be tolerated,” the organization said in a release, urging all Liberian workers to stand up against workplace exploitation and demand fair wages, safe working conditions, and legal protections when providing services to any company, whether foreign or domestic.
