Tiawan Gongloe Unveils Seven Anti-corruption Strategies In Liberia

NEW KRU TOWN, MONTSERRADO COUNTY – Prominent Liberian human rights lawyer and political leader, Cllr. Tiawan Saye Gongloe, has unveiled a seven-point strategy aimed at tackling corruption in Liberia. Speaking in New Kru Town on Friday, July 18, 2025, during a program commemorating Liberia’s 178th Independence Day, Gongloe described the fight against corruption as the country’s new liberation war.

Returning to what he called the revolutionary heartland of the Liberian People’s Party (LPP), Gongloe honored the memory of fallen comrades who, he said, dedicated their lives to justice and progress. He paid tribute to the late Anthony Nagbe, Ishmael Campbell, and Joseph Nagbe, describing them as patriots who served with integrity in the Legislature and the Supreme Court.

“Corruption is the cancer that eats away at the very soul of a nation,” Gongloe told the crowd. “It robs schools of chalk and clinics of medicine. It denies our youth opportunity, our elders dignity, and our country progress.”

Under the theme “Strategies to Combating Corruption in the Society,” Gongloe declared that public service must be about service, not personal enrichment. “Government is a place to serve, not to steal,” he said emphatically.

He then laid out seven bold strategies to curb corruption across all levels of government. His proposals include leading by example through ethical leadership; requiring all public officials to declare their assets prior to taking office; conducting quarterly lifestyle audits; strengthening institutions like the Anti-Corruption Commission and the judiciary; promoting transparency in budgeting and public procurement; empowering citizens, especially youth, through civic education and whistleblower protection; and enforcing accountability without political interference or favoritism.

“There must be consequences. No sacred cows,” Gongloe said. “Those who steal from the people must be punished, no matter their rank or political affiliation.”

He emphasized that these reforms are not mere aspirations but achievable solutions, provided there is the will to implement them. Gongloe also called on all Liberians to take ownership of the anti-corruption fight.

“Let us sweep corruption out of every office, every ministry, every agency and build a new Liberia based on honesty, fairness, and hope,” he said, concluding with a call to collective national action.
