Monrovia, Liberia June 9, 2025 – Despite coming under huge criticism for allegedly neglecting the late former Liberian First Lady Nancy Bohn Doe, former President George Weah has beaten all odds here, paying homage, special condolence and visiting home of the fallen former First Lady on Sunday, 8th June 2025 in Sinkor, Monrovia.

Mr. Weah has been in the spotlight for his alleged neglect of the late Madam Nancy Doe. Miss Veronica Mamie Doe, daughter of the deceased, had publicly slammed the former President for his outburst towards her mother before her death.

Mamie Doe had torn Mr. Weah apart for what she described as his neglect of her mother while she was alive.

“Stop the hypocrisy, George, because you were never there for her; you neglected her and provided a hostile treatment, public humiliation, and years of silent cruelty towards her”, Mamie Doe had lamented.

But during his visit to the bereaved family on Sunday, Mr. Weah called for unity among Southeasterners, while cautioning them not to allow politics to divide them.

“I came to sympathize with you, and you people are my family, and there’s a bond between us. You people should not allow anybody to divide us.”

Like the Doe Family, former President Weah hails from the southeast of Liberia, a region known for its strong politics.

Slain President Doe was fond of Weah and James ‘Salinsa’ Debah, for their exceptional soccer skills on the national team, The Lone Star, during the 80s, and personally sponsored them. Mr. Weah went on to become Africa’s Best and World Best Footballer in the 90s when Liberia was plunged into a bloody civil war in which Doe himself was killed.

“On behalf of my wife, my family, my institution, the CDC, I say sorry for the loss of our mother, and there’s no justification”, former President Weah said, as he sobbed in tears.

He reflected on his memories with the former Liberian First Lady, Nancy Doe.

“I had only met her three times in my entire life, and there’s no justification for how I treated her, because no one will justify; our mother is gone, and she cannot justify how I treated her, because she did not have the chance to talk. But I know I treated Nancy Doe with respect, and we should not let anything come between us. We are one people. We need peace, Mr. Weah emphasized in his tribute.

Meanwhile, Mr. Weah has contributed One Million Liberian Dollars, 50 bags of rice and two cows as his way of identifying with the former First Family in their bereavement.

In a brief response, Mamie Doe, thanked the former Liberian Leader for the gesture, disclosing that the occasion was her first encounter with him.

“It is my first time to see, I have never met him before”, she said in before a large audience. Editing by Jonathan Browne
