Liberia: STAND Demands Independent Probe into Death of Economist Jackson’s Wife

Monrovia — The Chairman of the Solidarity and Trust for a New Day (STAND), Mulbah K. Morlu Jr., has called for a credible and independent investigation into emerging concerns surrounding the death of the wife of Liberian economist Samuel P. Jackson.

The civil society group said it was deeply disturbed by recent developments connected to the death, which initially drew widespread sympathy from the Liberian public but has since raised troubling questions following new information circulating online.

Morlu said STAND extends sincere condolences to Jackson and his family during what he described as an extremely difficult period of grief. However, he stressed that the seriousness of emerging allegations requires a careful and professional response from the country’s law enforcement authorities.

“What began as a tragic loss that united the public in sympathy has, in light of recent developments, raised serious questions that require responsible attention,” Morlu said in the statement.

According to STAND, preliminary information reportedly released by authorities, combined with graphic images circulating publicly, has intensified concerns about the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death. The organization noted that some of the materials appearing online appear to suggest the possibility of violence against the deceased.

While acknowledging the public’s growing concern, Morlu urged Liberians to handle the matter with sensitivity and respect for the dignity of the deceased and her grieving family.

“The dignity, sanctity, and privacy of the deceased must be respected at all times,” he said. “Such sensitive matters should be handled with the utmost care and responsibility.”

The STAND chairman emphasized that any allegation or indication of violence against an individual must be treated with the highest level of seriousness. He stressed that in a democratic society governed by the rule of law, issues of this nature must be addressed through a professional and evidence-based process.

Morlu said the investigation must strictly adhere to due process to ensure that facts are established through credible and lawful methods. He added that any determination of responsibility should be made through impartial legal procedures rather than speculation or public pressure.

“A process grounded in evidence and due process protects both the pursuit of justice and the rights of all individuals involved,” he stated.

STAND also highlighted that the deceased was reportedly a foreign national from South Africa, a circumstance the organization says places an even greater responsibility on the Liberian government to ensure that the investigation meets the highest professional standards.

Morlu warned that the manner in which the case is handled could have broader implications for Liberia’s international reputation.

“The handling of such cases carries serious implications not only for public confidence within Liberia but also for the country’s international standing as a nation committed to protecting human life and upholding justice for both citizens and foreign nationals,” he said.

The STAND chairman further cautioned the public against politicizing the tragedy, particularly on social media platforms where speculation and inflammatory commentary have begun to circulate.

According to him, irresponsible public commentary could undermine the integrity of the investigative process and potentially inflame tensions.

Morlu also warned that reckless narratives could expose Liberians living abroad to unnecessary hostility if the issue becomes misrepresented internationally.

“In this sensitive context, Liberians must exercise restraint,” he said. “Respect for due process is essential to ensure that any outcome is credible, impartial, and accepted both domestically and internationally.”

In light of the concerns raised, STAND is calling for a thorough, independent, and transparent investigation conducted strictly under the rule of law. The organization said such a probe must be evidence-driven, professionally managed, and subject to appropriate oversight to guarantee credibility and public confidence.

Morlu maintained that only an impartial investigative process can provide clarity about the circumstances surrounding the death while safeguarding the rights of all parties involved.

He reiterated that STAND remains committed to promoting justice, accountability, and the protection of human dignity in Liberia.

“The loss of life under any circumstance demands seriousness, integrity, and responsible action from the institutions entrusted with upholding the law,” Morlu said.

He added that establishing the truth through a credible and transparent investigation is critical not only for the family involved but also for reinforcing Liberia’s commitment to justice and respect for human life.
