GC, Food Authority Review Food Safety Law

By Lewis S. Teh

MONROVIA, July 3, 2026 — The Governance Commission (GC) has provided technical guidance to the Food Authority of Liberia (FAL) on the National Food and Feed Quality and Safety Act to streamline institutional mandates and prevent duplication of responsibilities across government agencies.

The Commission’s Public Sector Reform (PSR) Mandate Area recently convened a working session with a team from the Food Authority at its conference room on 3rd Street, Sinkor. The meeting focused on reviewing the draft legislation and addressing concerns about overlapping functions among ministries and government agencies.

During the session, Policy Analyst-I Bill Tobga of the PSR Mandate Area presented findings from the review and introduced a coordination matrix intended to help institutions with related responsibilities establish collaboration mechanisms and clearly define their respective roles.

PSR Oversight Commissioner Sianeh Sackie Juah said the Governance Commission had reviewed FAL’s documents and provided recommendations to address potential areas of conflict.

“The GC is willing to work with the FAL to resolve conflict as per the mandate of the FAL,” Juah said.

Food Authority Director General Priscilla Cherue welcomed the Commission’s involvement and praised its role in advancing policy reform. She said the Authority would review the recommendations and move quickly to implement them.

The initiative forms part of broader public sector reform efforts aimed at improving government efficiency, strengthening service delivery, and ensuring that Liberia’s food and feed safety system operates effectively without mandate conflicts or duplication of functions.
