House Summons Agencies Over Persistent Flooding

By Bridgett Milton

Capitol Hill, July 8, 2026: The Environmental Protection Agency, the Ministry of Public Works, and the Disaster Management Team are scheduled to appear before the House of Representatives leadership on Monday, July 13, 2026. The appearance aims to address ongoing water overflow and flooding issues along Monrovia’s main street.

The decision follows a communication from Bong County District #6 Representative Moima Briggs Mensah.

Rep. Mensah requested the appearance to allow the institutions to address the increasing incidents of flooding and the dangers posed to lives, property, businesses, and public infrastructure during the current rainy season.

She urged the House to have relevant government institutions explain the causes of recurring flooding and outline measures being taken to address the situation.

The institutions are also expected to identify the root causes of persistent flooding on Main Street, Paynesville, and other flood-prone areas in Sinkor.

The House is seeking details on the current level of preparedness, inter-agency coordination, and emergency response mechanisms to prevent future flooding, as well as strategies to avoid disasters similar to recent flooding in neighboring Ghana.

Rep. Mensah noted that recurring flooding poses a significant public safety concern, threatens lives, disrupts businesses, damages infrastructure, and undermines residents’ well-being.

She said responsible institutions should provide explanations and present plans to strengthen resilience against flooding and other climate-related disasters.

The House Plenary unanimously endorsed the communication and instructed the Chief Clerk to formally summon the National Disaster Management Team, the Ministry of Public Works, and the Environmental Protection Agency to appear before the House leadership on Monday.
