GREATER NOIDA, India, July 30, 2026 — Grand Kru County Senator Numene T. H. Bartekwa has called on Liberians living abroad to safeguard the country’s image, saying their conduct and achievements play a critical role in shaping Liberia’s reputation on the international stage.
Speaking as keynote speaker at Liberia’s 179th Independence Day celebration at Sharda University in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, Bartekwa said patriotism extends beyond national borders and that every Liberian overseas has a responsibility to promote the country’s interests.
“Wherever you reside, you remain custodians of our nation’s image,” the senator said. “Your conduct and achievements continue to shape how Liberia is perceived around the world.”
The event brought together officials of Sharda University, Liberian students, representatives of the University of Liberia, and invited guests to commemorate Liberia’s independence and strengthen educational and cultural ties between Liberia and India.
Bartekwa urged Liberians abroad to use their opportunities to showcase Liberia’s progress, culture, and potential while avoiding actions that could tarnish the country’s reputation.
He encouraged members of the diaspora to serve as ambassadors for Liberia through professionalism, integrity, and meaningful contributions to their host communities.
Addressing Liberian students in India, the senator urged them to remain committed to their studies, respect the laws and cultural traditions of their host country, and use the knowledge and skills they acquire to support Liberia’s development.
“The education you are receiving represents an investment in Liberia’s future,” he said. “Your success abroad must become part of Liberia’s success at home.”
Bartekwa, who also serves as Chairperson of the University of Liberia’s Board of Trustees, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to academic excellence, research, innovation, ethical leadership, and producing graduates equipped to address national and global challenges.
He described Liberia’s relationship with India as a growing partnership built on education, healthcare, technical cooperation, scholarships, trade, and cultural exchange, and commended Sharda University for providing educational opportunities to Liberian students.
The senator also called for continued commitment to peace, accountability, transparency, the rule of law, and investment in education, describing them as essential pillars of national development.
Bartekwa’s visit is expected to include discussions with Sharda University officials on expanding cooperation with the University of Liberia in areas including academic exchange, research collaboration, and faculty development.
