MONROVIA, Liberia, August 6, 2026 – Unity Party National Advisory Council Chairman Amin Modad has defended the Boakai administration’s intensified crackdown on illicit drugs, describing recent arrests, investigations, dismissals, suspensions and major drug seizures as evidence of the Government’s commitment to tackling narcotics trafficking.
In a statement issued Wednesday, Modad warned that illicit drugs continue to pose a serious threat to Liberia by depriving young people of opportunities, weakening families, fueling crime and undermining economic growth.
He commended President Joseph Nyuma Boakai and the Government for escalating efforts to combat the country’s growing drug problem, saying the administration is demonstrating that no individual is above the law, regardless of political affiliation, public office or personal connections.
Modad, a former Unity Party chairman, recalled that during the 2023 presidential campaign, the party pledged to confront the country’s drug epidemic through impartial law enforcement and stronger accountability measures. He argued that the current anti-drug operations reflect the Government’s commitment to fulfilling that promise.
“The government has responded decisively, and President Boakai has made it unequivocally clear that no individual, regardless of rank, political affiliation, or personal relationship, is above the law,” he said.
According to Modad, the frequency and scale of recent drug seizures underscore the depth of Liberia’s illicit drug trade. He dismissed attempts by political critics to downplay the significance of the Government’s actions.
He also praised officers of Liberia’s security and law enforcement agencies for their efforts to investigate drug-related crimes and dismantle criminal networks, saying the operations have helped strengthen public confidence in the country’s security institutions.
Modad emphasized that public participation remains essential to sustaining the fight against narcotics.
“The fight against illicit drugs is a long-term endeavor and not simply a law enforcement issue; it is a national development imperative that requires a national partnership built on vigilance, responsibility, and an unwavering commitment to the rule of law,” he said.
While backing the Government’s anti-drug campaign, Modad called for fairness and due process in the ongoing investigations. He said all suspects should be afforded fair trials and that only those found guilty should face the full weight of the law.
He also urged the media to report responsibly on drug-related investigations, encouraging journalists to avoid political bias and refrain from prejudging individuals before legal proceedings are concluded.
