Harper, Maryland County – The Liberia National Tourism Authority (LNTA) has launched a county-wide initiative in Maryland County to identify, assess, and promote cultural and historical sites with the potential to boost tourism and preserve the county’s rich heritage.
On Tuesday, August 4, 2026, a delegation from the LNTA paid a courtesy visit to Maryland County Superintendent Nathaniel S. Toe Jr. at his office in Harper City to discuss opportunities for collaboration in developing the county’s tourism sector.
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, the LNTA’s Deputy Director General explained that the visit is part of the Authority’s nationwide effort to identify and document Liberia’s cultural, historical, and eco-tourism attractions.
He noted that the assessment will help the Authority determine which sites can be developed, preserved, and promoted both nationally and internationally.
According to him, Maryland County possesses significant tourism potential thanks to its rich history, unique cultural traditions, historical landmarks, scenic landscapes, and coastal attractions.
He emphasized that the Authority is committed to working with local authorities and communities to ensure these resources contribute to economic growth through tourism development.
Welcoming the delegation, Superintendent Nathaniel S. Toe Jr. praised the Liberia National Tourism Authority for including Maryland County in its national tourism assessment exercise.
He highlighted the county’s historical importance as the former Republic of Maryland in Africa, emphasizing that Maryland boasts numerous cultural and historical sites capable of attracting both local and international visitors if properly developed and promoted.
Superintendent Toe further disclosed that the county administration is preparing to commemorate Maryland’s unique history as “Maryland in Africa” through a special Independence Day celebration.
He described the planned observance as an important opportunity to preserve the county’s identity while promoting cultural heritage, tourism, peace, reconciliation, and unity among Marylanders both at home and abroad.
He expressed confidence that, with the support of the Liberia National Tourism Authority and other partners, the celebration could become an annual tourism event that attracts visitors and creates economic opportunities for local businesses.
Responding, the LNTA delegation welcomed the county’s vision and pledged its commitment to partnering with the Maryland County Administration in promoting the celebration and other tourism initiatives.
The Authority assured Superintendent Toe that it would use its national platform to market Maryland County’s tourism potential, provide technical support as needed, and collaborate in showcasing the county’s cultural heritage to a wider audience.
The visit marks another step in the LNTA’s ongoing efforts to strengthen domestic tourism by identifying and promoting Liberia’s diverse cultural and historical assets, while encouraging local communities to preserve their heritage for future generations.
