Monrovia, Liberia: The Management of GNN Liberia has issued a correction and apology over a story published by the news outlet on July 24, 2026, under the headline, “Liberia’s Top Police Brass & Intelligence Chief Detained in Massive US$318M Cocaine Cartel Probe.”
The report mentioned Mr. Olufemi Briggs, Chief of Intelligence of the Liberia National Police, in connection with the ongoing investigation into a major cocaine trafficking case.
However, following an internal review and an interview conducted by the GNN Liberia news team, the management has established that Mr. Briggs has no link to the alleged drug cartel and is not under investigation in connection with the ongoing drug case.
GNN Liberia therefore wishes to make clear that the inclusion of Mr. Briggs’ name in the July 24 story was an error and should not have been associated with the drug investigation.
The earlier report stated that Mr. Briggs was among senior law enforcement officials allegedly detained and questioned over possible links to the movement and protection of a large cocaine shipment. After reviewing the information surrounding the matter and speaking with Mr. Briggs, GNN Liberia found no information establishing his involvement in the alleged drug operation or indicating that he is a subject of the investigation.
GNN Liberia therefore sincerely apologizes to Mr. Olufemi Briggs for mentioning his name in the report and for any embarrassment, inconvenience, or harm the publication may have caused him.
The management accepts responsibility for the error and regrets that the information was published without adequate verification.
As a media institution, GNN Liberia recognizes its responsibility to ensure that information published to the public is accurate, fair, and properly verified, especially when reporting on sensitive matters involving law enforcement officers, public officials, and criminal investigations.
For the avoidance of doubt, this correction is limited to the reference made to Mr. Briggs and should not be interpreted as an attempt to interfere with or prejudge the wider investigation into the alleged cocaine trafficking operation.
GNN Liberia believes that when a media organization discovers that it has published inaccurate information, it must have the courage to correct the record and apologize to those affected.
The Management therefore considers this statement a formal correction to the July 24, 2026 publication and once again extends its sincere apology to Mr. Olufemi Briggs for the inaccurate reference to his name.
