The All Liberia Coalition Party (ALCOP) supports the government’s fight against drugs but condemns in the strongest terms what it describes as the Liberia National Police (LNP) apparent intimidation of critical voices calling for accountability in the ongoing fight against cocaine and other illicit drugs.
ALCOP describes the Liberia National Police’s invitation of Gbarpolu County’s Senator Amara M. Konneh; one of the most vocal advocates for an independent investigation into the country’s drug-related challenges, as an apparent attempt to silence individuals who are demanding transparency and accountability from the police.
ALCOP further expresses concern that the police’s actions could create the perception of secrecy.
The party called on the police to ensure that the fight against drugs is conducted fairly, transparently, and without political intimidation.
ALCOP promises to defend the constitutional rights of every Liberian to speak out, seek accountability, and demand answers from the police regarding its handling of the fight against illicit drugs in Liberia.
ALCOP cautioned the Liberia National Police to focus more on investigating drug dealers than focusing its attention on critics and political voices; a move that may divert its goal of pursuing drug dealers and those responsible for the trafficking and distribution of illicit substances.
The All Liberia Coalition Party therefore calls on the police to prioritize the prosecution of drug traffickers, strengthen independent investigations, protect whistleblowers and critical voices, and provide the Liberian people with clear and credible information about efforts to combat the country’s growing drug problem.
The All Liberia Coalition Party remains committed to democratic accountability, the rule of law, and the protection of the rights of every Liberian to question government actions and demand transparency.
