MONROVIA, Liberia, September 2, 2026 — The General Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star (OES) has celebrated Rob Morris Day with a special Thanksgiving and Intercessory Service, calling on members to uphold the organization’s principles of faith, service, charity and unity.
The service, held Sunday, August 30, at the First Presbyterian Church in Monrovia, brought together members of the OES, Freemasons and other guests to commemorate the life and legacy of Rob Morris, founder of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Morris established the OES based on his belief that wives, mothers, daughters, sisters and other female relatives of Master Masons should have an opportunity to participate in an organization founded on moral teachings similar to those embraced by Freemasonry.
Rev. Sister Sanjee Stepter, Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Liberia, delivered the sermon during the Thanksgiving and Intercessory Service.
Speaking on the theme, “United in Purpose, Devoted in Service, Living Out the Faith That Binds Us,” Stepter urged members to embrace love, unity, patience and service in their relationships with one another and society.
General Grand Worthy Matron, Worthy Sister Mydea White Simmons, delivered the oration, reflecting on the virtues represented by the five heroines of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Simmons highlighted Adah as representing fidelity; Ruth, devotion and loyalty; Esther, courage and self-sacrifice; Martha, faith and service; and Electa, charity, constancy and endurance.
She said the five heroines collectively provide a model for living a life of character and service.
According to Simmons, following those virtues can “make us better Eastern Stars, better family members, better friends, better leaders and better servants of humanity.”
She described Morris’ vision for the OES as creating a “school of character” that encourages members to look beyond themselves and dedicate their lives to service.
Simmons also reflected on Morris’ legacy, his contribution to opportunities for women within the fraternity and the responsibility of current OES members to preserve his vision.
She urged members to keep Morris’ principles alive through their daily conduct and interactions with others.
In special remarks, Most Worshipful Grand Master Willis J. Allen congratulated General Grand Worthy Matron Simmons and her corps of officers for organizing the Rob Morris Day celebration.
Allen pledged the Grand Lodge’s continued support and cooperation with the activities of the Order of the Eastern Star.
The celebration concluded with a rally at the First Presbyterian Church, followed by a banquet at the Grand Masonic Temple on West Benson Street in Monrovia.
