MONROVIA, September 10, 2026: The Government of Liberia has declined to provide details about an unidentified vessel discovered along the Monrovia coastline Thursday, saying security authorities are investigating its origin, ownership and circumstances surrounding its appearance.
The vessel was reportedly discovered early Thursday, prompting officers of the Liberia National Police (LNP) and other security personnel to secure the area and begin an assessment.
Police said no crew members were found aboard the vessel when security personnel arrived.
A joint maritime and law enforcement assessment has since been launched to identify the vessel, determine its origin, trace its movements and establish how it came ashore.
Authorities have urged members of the public not to remove items from the vessel and appealed to anyone with relevant information, photographs or video footage to assist investigators.
Responding to questions about the vessel Thursday at the Ministry of Information’s regular press briefing in Monrovia, Deputy Information Minister for Press and Public Affairs Daniel Sanoe said security agencies had not yet reached any conclusion regarding the incident.
Sanoe said there was currently no basis to link the vessel to criminal activity, stressing that investigations were still underway.
He said the government would provide additional information once security authorities complete their investigation.
“When the outcome of the investigation becomes available to us, information will be provided to the public,” Sanoe said.
Authorities have so far not publicly disclosed the vessel’s name, registration, ownership or country of origin, leaving questions about its identity and movements unanswered.
The latest discovery comes amid a separate investigation involving another vessel that was previously intercepted in neighboring Côte d’Ivoire and subsequently returned to Liberia.
Sanoe said investigations into that vessel also remain ongoing and that the government would release information when findings become available.
The government did not indicate whether investigators have established any connection between the two vessels.
