Former Maryland Quizzer Donates to Team, Pledges Help After Poor Living Conditions Exposed

MONROVIA — A former Maryland County quizzer and coach, Freddie Goe, has donated US$35 to the county’s quizzing team following reports about the difficult conditions under which the players are staying during the ongoing National Quizzing Tournament.

Goe visited the team on Friday and also pledged to support their feeding and help improve their sleeping arrangements after reports that some players were sleeping on the bare floor due to limited mattresses.

The team is currently staying at a local school building in Day Break Mouth Open Community, where technical staff said the players have been facing challenges with accommodation, food and transportation.

The assistance from Goe follows earlier support from Maryland County Youth President Melvin Weah, who also provided assistance to the team.

The Maryland Students Union (MaSU) leadership also reported receiving US$10 and LRD$8,000 in support, including US$10 and LRD$7,000 from the Maryland Youth Association (MYA) and US$10 and LRD$1,000 from Marylanders based in Monrovia.

The MaSU leadership said the funds were being used to help cover transportation and feeding, while additional support is needed to secure suitable accommodation and provide some compensation for the players.

Speaking after the donation, Goe confirmed the support and appealed to other Marylanders to assist the team.

“As a former Quizzer and Quizzing Coach, I had to give back considering the challenges the team is faced with. We also seek the help of other meaningful Marylanders to contribute to the team for a success,” Goe said.»

Goe, a Senior Operations Engineer at the Liberia Electricity Corporation, previously quizzed for Central Site High School from 2013 to 2016 and later coached the school’s quizzing team from 2017 to 2022.

Meanwhile, Maryland has already recorded a win in the tournament, defeating Bong County 130–100, a 30-point margin. Team captain Leo Dickson was named Man of the Match after the victory.

Despite the win, members of the team continue to appeal for assistance with food, transportation and suitable accommodation as they prepare for their remaining matches.
