The Press Union of Liberia (PUL) has raised serious questions regarding the press freedom legacy of the Joseph Boakai-led administration, calling on the government to take concrete steps to improve journalists’ welfare and support the development of Liberia’s media sector.
Speaking at the Union’s 2nd Annual Presidential Media Dinner 2026 on Saturday, PUL President Julius Kanubah challenged the Unity Party administration to define its lasting impact on the nation’s press landscape. Kanubah questioned whether the administration will ultimately be remembered for empowering a free, professional press or for failing to address the systemic vulnerabilities long faced by media institutions.
Kanubah emphasized that a positive media legacy requires moving beyond verbal commitments to deliver actionable policies. He highlighted journalists’ welfare as an urgent priority, noting that many media workers across Liberia continue to endure difficult working conditions, low pay, and limited professional advancement opportunities.
Furthermore, the PUL leadership expressed concerns over the broader climate for press freedom, asserting that the administration’s handling of journalists’ safety and access to public information will serve as a critical benchmark of its commitment to democratic governance.
Kanubah’s remarks reflect growing calls from Liberia’s journalistic community for institutional support, improved labor standards, and stronger policy protections. As the Boakai administration continues to shape its national agenda, the PUL stressed that its legacy will depend heavily on whether it leaves behind a media sector that is freer, better resourced, and capable of holding public power to account.
