The Liberia Electricity Regulatory Commission (LERC) has renewed Jungle Energy Power’s (JEP) Large Micro Utility Distribution License, authorizing the company to continue distributing electricity in Nimba County.
The renewal ceremony brought together government officials, local authorities, community representatives, civil society organizations and other stakeholders, including representatives of LERC, the Ministry of Mines and Energy and the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC).
Presenting the renewed license, LERC Acting Board Chairman Amara M. Kamara challenged JEP to increase investment in infrastructure, system maintenance, customer service, safety, metering and overall network reliability.
Kamara said the renewed license carries both rights and responsibilities, stressing that JEP is expected to provide reliable, safe, affordable and quality electricity services to residents and businesses across Nimba County.
He acknowledged concerns among consumers about electricity reliability, affordability, customer service and responsiveness, saying residents have legitimate expectations regarding the quality of services they receive.
“LERC will continue to engage consumers and service providers to ensure that these concerns are appropriately addressed within the regulatory framework,” Kamara said, referencing the Commission’s recent engagement with Citizens United for Free and Fair Electricity Services (CUFFIES).
He urged JEP to view the license renewal not simply as authorization to continue operating, but as a renewed commitment to consumers in Nimba.
Kamara also encouraged the company to use its renewed mandate to expand electricity access to underserved communities while improving the quality and reliability of existing services.
Deputy Mines and Energy Minister for Energy Charles Umehai said expanding electricity access is critical to Liberia’s broader economic and social development.
“Access to electricity is not simply about powering homes and businesses; it is about creating opportunities, supporting education, improving healthcare services, and stimulating economic growth,” Umehai said.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to expanding electricity access across Liberia, saying communities should not be left behind in the national electrification drive.
According to Umehai, the renewal recognizes JEP’s role in providing electricity services in Nimba while reinforcing the company’s obligation to maintain high standards in service delivery, operational efficiency, customer care and regulatory compliance.
Responding on behalf of JEP, General Manager Aleyou Keita welcomed the renewal and described it as a renewed commitment to meeting the expectations of customers and other stakeholders.
Keita said the company will focus on improving service delivery, expanding infrastructure, strengthening safety standards and metering, and continuing investment in its electricity distribution network.
JEP also expressed appreciation to LERC, the Government of Liberia, the Ministry of Mines and Energy, LEC, local authorities, community leaders and customers for their engagement during the licensing process.
Stakeholders attending the ceremony welcomed the renewal but called on JEP to improve its operations and the quality of services provided to consumers.
They particularly stressed the need for stronger maintenance and safety measures across the distribution network to protect infrastructure, customers, employees and communities from electricity-related risks.
Stakeholders also called for sustained engagement among JEP, consumers, local authorities and LERC to address concerns over service reliability, customer relations, metering, affordability and expansion of the electricity network.
