MONROVIA — The Liberia National Tourism Authority (LNTA) is calling for the increased adoption of digital technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to transform Liberia’s tourism sector and unlock fresh opportunities for local businesses, communities, and international visitors.

The call was made on Monday, September 28, 2026, as Liberia joined the global community to observe World Tourism Day at the LNTA headquarters on 18th Street in Sinkor, Monrovia.

This year’s celebration was held under the national theme, “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism,” underscoring the vital role of technology in accelerating the promotion and sustainable development of the country’s tourism industry.

Speaking during the program, the Acting Director General of the LNTA, Melvin Nye, emphasized that tourism remains an indispensable pillar of national development with the unique power to unite Liberians across diverse communities and social backgrounds.

Nye noted that President Joseph Nyuma Boakai views tourism as a driver of economic growth, job creation, and national unity. He added that as the global travel industry shifts toward digital solutions, modern technology becomes essential for marketing Liberia’s unique destinations and connecting local operators with international travelers.

The Acting Director General commended LNTA’s management team and staff for their dedication, attributing the agency’s ongoing progress to strong collective effort. He also recognized Director General Princess Z. Cooper for her leadership and vision in steering the authority forward.

Delivering the keynote address on “Digital Transformation and the Future of Liberia Tourism,” Paul Wungko described tourism as a national priority, pointing out that Liberia is endowed with rich natural and cultural resources capable of attracting domestic and international tourists.

Wungko highlighted Liberia’s pristine beaches, historic landmarks, and rich cultural heritage, explaining how digital tools and AI applications can be leveraged to package and showcase these assets to global audiences. However, he cautioned that while digital platforms enhance visibility and visitor engagement, the ultimate value lies in preserving and delivering authentic experiences on the ground.

Other speakers at the event underscored tourism’s capacity to stimulate local economies by empowering tour guides, hoteliers, artisans, culinary workers, transport operators, and small-scale entrepreneurs.

The World Tourism Day observance brought together current and former government officials, LNTA executives, and key industry stakeholders to assess the nation’s tourism prospects while placing digital innovation and AI at the center of Liberia’s destination marketing strategy.
