MONROVIA, Liberia, September 29, 2026 — China and the United States have called on Iran to honor its commitment not to develop nuclear weapons as Presidents Xi Jinping and Donald Trump concluded high-level talks in Washington with a series of agreements aimed at strengthening strategic stability between the world’s two largest economies.
The Iran nuclear issue was among eight key deliverables and understandings announced following President Xi’s state visit to the United States from September 23 to 25. The two leaders also agreed that no country or institution should be allowed to impose tolls on international waterways.
According to China’s official account of the talks, Xi and Trump held in-depth discussions on China-U.S. relations as well as major international and regional issues, agreeing to build what they described as “a constructive China-U.S. relationship of strategic stability” based on respect, fairness and reciprocity.
The White House similarly said the two countries agreed to pursue a constructive relationship based on respect, fairness and reciprocity, while discussing global concerns including Iran, Russia and North Korea.
The two governments also agreed to support each other in hosting upcoming major international gatherings, including the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting and the G20 Summit. Xi and Trump indicated their intention to attend the meetings hosted by each other’s countries.
On trade, the leaders endorsed the outcomes of consultations between their economic and trade teams, including efforts to establish and advance a Board of Trade and other mechanisms.
The understandings also include an arrangement for a US$30 billion reciprocal tariff reduction and an extension of outcomes reached during earlier economic and trade consultations in Kuala Lumpur. The two leaders instructed their respective governments to implement the agreements.
Counter-narcotics cooperation also featured prominently in the talks. According to the official Chinese account, law enforcement agencies from both countries have recently worked together on several cases involving New Psychoactive Substances and precursor chemicals, resulting in the apprehension of dozens of suspects in China and the United States.
The two sides also announced a new dialogue mechanism on emerging artificial intelligence technologies to exchange views on their risks and benefits, with another round of discussions expected in November 2026.
They further agreed to establish a bilateral communication channel to address incidents involving the technology. China’s official statement refers to the mechanism as the “China-U.S. AI Dialogue,” while the White House describes it as the “U.S.-China Super Intelligence Dialogue.”
On military relations, the Chinese and U.S. militaries agreed to work toward concluding a memorandum of understanding on crisis communication and prevention as soon as possible.
They also agreed to continue cooperation in searching for the remains of U.S. servicemembers who went missing in China.
Xi and Trump also recalled that China and the United States were allies during World War II and fought against common enemies during the conflict.
In another diplomatic gesture, the United States welcomed the arrival of two giant pandas leased by China to Zoo Atlanta, marking the return of giant pandas to the Atlanta zoo.
The agreements represent efforts by Washington and Beijing to manage longstanding differences while maintaining dialogue and cooperation in areas ranging from trade and emerging technology to narcotics enforcement and military crisis communication.
