MONROVIA, October 1, 2026 — Liberian lawyer and law professor Cllr. Tiawan Saye Gongloe has called on the Monrovia City Police to stop what he describes as the harassment of petty traders along Mechlin Street, urging city authorities to adopt a more humane approach to enforcing municipal regulations.

Gongloe said petty traders are struggling to earn a living through small businesses and should not be subjected to unnecessary harassment as authorities seek to maintain order in the city.

He urged the Monrovia City Corporation and its police to engage the affected traders and find practical solutions that balance enforcement of city regulations with the need to protect the livelihoods of ordinary Liberians.

According to Gongloe, maintaining order in Monrovia should not come at the expense of the dignity and economic survival of people who depend on petty trading to support themselves and their families.

His comments come amid longstanding tensions between city authorities and street vendors over the use of sidewalks, streets and other public spaces for commercial activities.

Gongloe maintained that city regulations should be enforced with respect for the rights and economic circumstances of those affected, while encouraging dialogue between authorities and traders to address the issue.
