MONROVIA, Liberia, October 2, 2026 — The Judiciary of Liberia has rejected claims that tribal considerations or Chief Justice Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay influenced a Gompa City Magisterial Court decision sentencing former Gompa City Mayor Amos Suah to 30 days in prison for contempt.
In a statement, the Judiciary said the court acted independently and based its ruling solely on contempt of court, stressing that all Liberian courts have authority to punish conduct that obstructs or undermines the administration of justice.
“The court decided on the law, not tribal sentiment; therefore, the Chief Justice should not be associated with the ruling’s outcome,” the Judiciary said.
The controversy is linked to a land dispute involving the Kalefa Turay family and occupants of disputed property in Gompa City, Nimba County.
According to the Judiciary, the Turay family acquired the property in 1951 through a public land sale deed, and a subsequent court judgment in their favor was not appealed.
The Judiciary said any challenge to the judgment or its enforcement should be pursued through established legal procedures rather than public pressure or ethnic considerations.
It also rejected attempts to associate Chief Justice Gbeisay with the outcome, saying his constitutional responsibility is to administer justice without fear or favor, regardless of ethnicity, county of origin or political affiliation.
The Judiciary acknowledged that land disputes are sensitive because of their connection to livelihood, identity and heritage, but warned against turning the Gompa dispute into an ethnic conflict.
It maintained that citizens have the right to criticize court decisions but said dissatisfied parties should pursue available legal remedies.
The Judiciary reaffirmed its commitment to judicial independence, due process and equal justice, insisting that cases will not be decided on tribal affiliation or other extrajudicial considerations.
