MONROVIA — The National Bureau of Veteran Affairs has disowned a planned general muster of Armed Forces of Liberia veterans scheduled for Oct. 15 at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex, warning that the gathering has not been authorized by the government.
The bureau, in a statement issued Wednesday, said the muster announced by retired Capt. William Philip Anderson was neither authorized nor sanctioned by the NBVA or the Government of Liberia.
It cautioned AFL veterans, widows, widowers and children of deceased military personnel against attending the gathering or relying on information circulating on social media and through other unofficial channels.
The NBVA also rejected reports linking the planned gathering to the alleged payment of 36 years of retroactive salaries to AFL veterans.
According to the bureau, the government has issued no official communication confirming or authorizing such payments, and veterans should rely only on information formally released by relevant government authorities.
The bureau said any government-sanctioned program involving veterans — including the payment of benefits or salaries, registration exercises or musters — would be announced through formal and verifiable channels.
It warned that veterans who choose to attend the Oct. 15 gathering would do so at their own risk and encouraged them to seek clarification from the NBVA before responding to information from unverified sources.
While distancing itself from the planned muster, the NBVA acknowledged the sacrifices of veterans who served in the Armed Forces of Liberia and urged them to continue demonstrating discipline, unity, patriotism and respect for the law.
The bureau also called on veterans and the public to avoid activities that could create confusion or unrest surrounding government programs and procedures.
The NBVA reiterated that it does not recognize the Oct. 15 muster announced by Anderson and said it would continue working with relevant government agencies to address issues affecting Liberia’s military veterans.
