CAPITOL HILL, October 14, 2026 – House Speaker Richard N. Koon has urged members of the House of Representatives to resolve their differences through internal dialogue rather than public confrontation, warning that persistent disputes could further undermine public confidence in the Legislature.
Speaking Tuesday, October 13, amid ongoing tensions within the House, Koon acknowledged that disagreements are inevitable in a democratic institution but stressed that lawmakers must handle them constructively.
“We are politicians and representatives from different constituencies. We are individuals from different schools of thought, interests, and convictions. Disagreements are therefore inevitable,” he said.
According to the Speaker, a healthy democracy does not require lawmakers to agree on every issue but demands that they manage their differences responsibly.
He expressed concern that internal disagreements are increasingly being taken into the public domain before established mechanisms for resolving them are exhausted.
“Every internal disagreement that becomes a public spectacle has consequences beyond the individuals involved. It affects the image of the entire House and further erodes the confidence of our citizens in the institution we have all sworn to serve,” Koon warned.
He argued that public confrontations among lawmakers damage the credibility of the entire House because citizens often associate individual actions with the institution.
Koon pledged to remain open to dialogue and ensure that lawmakers’ concerns are addressed fairly, emphasizing that restoring unity requires cooperation from all members.
“As Speaker, I remain committed to listening to members, respecting diversity of views, and providing an environment in which concerns can be raised and addressed fairly,” he assured colleagues.
Meanwhile, the Speaker disclosed that discussions are ongoing to address grievances raised by the Reformist lawmakers, who have challenged the House leadership over financial and administrative concerns.
He expressed optimism that the discussions could be concluded by Thursday, October 15.
Koon also thanked members of the Reformist group for allowing him to engage them and present his position on the dispute.
His appeal comes amid continuing disagreements over legislative benefits, financial accountability and leadership concerns that have disrupted House activities.
Although Koon indicated that tensions were easing, no final agreement had been announced at the time of his remarks.
