MONROVIA, LIBERIA — The political atmosphere is heating up as the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), Liberia’s former ruling party, prepares for a major national convention that could redefine its political direction, reshape its leadership and send a powerful message to the ruling Unity Party ahead of the 2029 general elections.

For CDC partisans, this is more than a convention. It is a moment of political awakening, a gathering of a movement seeking to reclaim its place at the center of Liberia’s political destiny.

With former President George Manneh Weah remaining a central figure in the party, expectations are rising that the gathering could become a massive demonstration of loyalty, political strength and renewed determination among CDC supporters across the country.

THE GREEN MACHINE IS PREPARING FOR ANOTHER POLITICAL BATTLE!

From Montserrado to Nimba, Bong, Lofa, Grand Bassa and the southeastern counties, CDC supporters will be watching closely as the party prepares to reorganize its political structures and determine the leadership that will steer its affairs into the next electoral cycle.

But beneath the excitement lies a serious political question: Can the CDC transform its enthusiasm into a disciplined, united and nationally attractive political force capable of challenging the Unity Party in 2029?

A CONVENTION THAT COULD TEST INTERNAL LOYALTIES

The convention is not without controversy. Concerns have already surfaced over the proposed coordination of the process, with Eugene S. Joboe Jr., CDC Montserrado County’s Vice Chairman for Inter-Party Affairs, reportedly questioning Jefferson Tamba Koijee’s expected role in coordinating the convention because of his reported interest in contesting a national executive position.

Joboe has reportedly advocated a neutral arrangement to guarantee fairness among aspirants.

This disagreement could become an early test of the party’s commitment to internal democracy. A movement seeking to convince Liberians that it is ready to govern again must first demonstrate that it can manage its own political differences.

WILL THE CONVENTION SEND SHOCKWAVES THROUGH THE UNITY PARTY?

For the ruling Unity Party, the CDC convention will be worth watching. A successful gathering could give the opposition party renewed organizational momentum, strengthen its grassroots networks and put pressure on the government to defend its record before Liberian voters.

However, the CDC cannot depend on political excitement alone. Liberians will expect answers about jobs, economic opportunities, affordable healthcare, education, infrastructure, corruption and the cost of living.

The party must show that it has more than a popular political figure and an enthusiastic following. It must demonstrate that it has a credible plan for the country’s future.

THE BIG QUESTION: IS WEAH PREPARING FOR A POLITICAL COMEBACK?

George Weah’s political future will undoubtedly remain a major subject of discussion. His supporters see him as the central figure capable of mobilizing the CDC and leading its political campaign toward 2029.

Whether the convention becomes the launching pad for another presidential campaign or a broader party-rebuilding exercise, its outcome could have significant consequences for Liberia’s political landscape.

LIBERIANS ARE WATCHING!

The CDC may arrive at its convention with drums, slogans, green colors and thousands of enthusiastic supporters. But the ultimate political verdict will not be delivered by the loudest crowd at a convention ground. It will be delivered by Liberian voters at the ballot box.

For now, one thing is certain: the road to 2029 is becoming politically interesting, and the CDC is preparing to make its presence felt.
