Linu Leader Dr. Moniba Slams Liberia’s Agricultural Priorities: “us$13 Million On Agriculture, But Us$200 Million Importing Rice Is Stupidity”

MONROVIA, LIBERIA — Liberia’s agricultural priorities have come under sharp criticism from Liberia National Union (LINU) political leader Dr. Clarence L. Moniba, who has questioned why the country continues spending enormous amounts importing rice while allocating comparatively little funding to domestic agricultural production.

“Spending US$13 million on the agriculture sector, but US$200 million importing rice, is stupidity,” Dr. Moniba declared, challenging the government’s commitment to agricultural development and food self-sufficiency.

His criticism has reignited the debate over Liberia’s dependence on imported rice, the country’s most important staple food, and whether government spending priorities are undermining the development of local agriculture.

The comparison raises a fundamental economic question: Why should Liberia continue spending hundreds of millions of dollars importing its staple food while local farmers struggle with inadequate financing, farming equipment, improved seeds, fertilizers, irrigation facilities and access to markets?

Dr. Moniba’s intervention places renewed pressure on the Boakai administration to explain its agricultural priorities and demonstrate how public spending is translating into increased domestic food production.
