MONROVIA – The All Liberia Coalition Party (ALCOP) has strongly condemned a divisive and derogatory statement made at a recent political rally by supporters of Representative Samuel G. Kogar, the Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction (MDR) candidate in the ongoing Senatorial by-election in Nimba County.
In a press release issued Thursday, April 17, ALCOP described the remark as not only an affront to the intelligence of peaceful citizens in Nimba County but also a serious threat to national harmony and peaceful coexistence among Liberians. The party warned that such inflammatory rhetoric evokes painful memories of the country’s brutal civil war, during which a particular tribal group was systematically targeted.
ALCOP acknowledged the subsequent condemnation issued by Vice President Jeremiah K. Koung and Representative Kogar, but criticized the timing as insufficient and delayed. “Such divisive statements should have been disavowed immediately and at the very venue where they were made,” the release stated.
As a member of the Unity Party Alliance, ALCOP is urging the MDR to take full responsibility by publicly condemning the remark and removing the individual responsible from Kogar’s campaign team without delay.
The party also reminded the Unity Party-led government, especially Vice President Koung, of its commitment to address the long-standing land dispute in Nimba County, a pledge enshrined in a previously agreed framework. ALCOP stressed the importance of fulfilling this promise as a key step toward promoting sustainable peace and unity in the county.
Calling on all politicians and their supporters to refrain from provocative actions and rhetoric, ALCOP emphasized that maintaining peace in Nimba is essential to preserving the unity of Liberia as a whole.
In a message directed at members of the Mandingo community, the party appealed for calm, patience, and restraint while it continues to engage the government in pursuit of a lasting resolution to the land conflict.
Signed by National Secretary Lassana A. M. Kamara, the statement reflects ALCOP’s firm stance against political incitement and its ongoing commitment to peace and justice for all Liberians.
