AML Celebrates 2026 Health & Safety Day Across Operations

Yekepa, May 11, 2026: ArcelorMittal Liberia marked its 2026 Health and Safety Day across operational sites in Buchanan, Yekepa, Gangra, and Tokadeh Mines, uniting employees, contractors, and management under the theme: “Making Zero Happen: Zero Harm, Zero Excuses.”

The event featured vibrant street parades, interactive indoor sessions, and the recognition of employees for exceptional safety performance through certificates and gifts of appreciation.

These activities reinforced the company’s ongoing commitment to fostering a workplace culture where safety is a collective responsibility at every level.

Delivering remarks on behalf of CEO Michiel Vandermerwe, Head of Special Projects Cllr. Boakai Paegar encouraged all employees to make safety a daily habit, both at work and beyond, emphasizing vigilance and mutual care. “Let us watch out for our fellow workers, let us watch out for ourselves,” he said.

In Yekepa, Training Manager Dawie Loots cautioned against hasty and unsafe work practices, noting that most workplace accidents are preventable when risks are properly managed. Internal Auditor Arnold Mufandaedza echoed this message, reminding staff that returning home safely each day is a core responsibility aligned with the company’s “zero harm” vision.

Health and Safety Lead at the Concentrator, Angelique Myers-Jekula, reinforced the commitment to safety, stressing that every task must be performed in full compliance with established safety standards.

Adding excitement to the Yekepa program, ADT Operator Ellis Collins, known as “Mega-G,” energized the crowd with an original safety-themed musical performance, underscoring the day’s important message through creative expression.

ArcelorMittal Liberia’s Health and Safety Day reaffirmed the company’s dedication to embedding safety as a core value throughout its operations. Globally, ArcelorMittal places the safety and well-being of its employees and host communities at the heart of its mission, treating it as a non-negotiable operational priority, not just a compliance requirement.

In Liberia, this commitment is especially strong: the company integrates rigorous safety standards at every stage of mining and logistics, protects staff through comprehensive training and modern equipment, and adheres strictly to international best practices.

Local communities benefit from proactive engagement, emergency preparedness programs, and infrastructure designed with public safety in mind.

By embedding safety into its corporate culture, ArcelorMittal Liberia demonstrates that sustainable growth and responsible mining are only possible when people and communities are put first.
