MONROVIA — The Bassa Stakeholders Group has donated more than US$2,000 worth of sporting materials to the Bassa Sports Association as part of efforts to strengthen grassroots sports and identify homegrown talent ahead of the 2026 National County Sports Meet.
The non-political group, comprising prominent citizens and professionals from Grand Bassa County, presented 12 sets of jerseys and 10 footballs Thursday, Aug. 27, in Monrovia for teams participating in the upcoming Grand Bassa County District League.
Moses Zangar Jr., acting chairman of the group’s Interim Sports Committee, said the District League will serve as an important talent-scouting platform ahead of the National County Sports Meet scheduled for November.
According to Zangar, the contribution reflects the group’s commitment to youth development and the growth of sports across Grand Bassa.
“As the District League’s prime sponsor, the Bassa Stakeholders Group has allocated LD$130,000 in prize money for the competition’s winner and runners-up,” he said.
Zangar said the group wants to strengthen the development of homegrown talent and ensure young athletes have the necessary resources to compete and excel.
“The District League is the foundation for identifying the best players who will proudly represent Grand Bassa at the National County Sports Meet,” he said.
Nat Bayjay, acting chair of Press and Publicity, welcomed the presentation and urged the Bassa Sports Association to ensure the materials help restore pride among football-loving citizens of Grand Bassa, which has gone a decade without winning the football championship of the National County Sports Meet.
Bayjay said 2026 marks exactly 10 years since Grand Bassa, which he described as a footballing county, last captured the football title.
“This is unacceptable. That’s why we, the Bassa Stakeholders, are very intentional with such support that will extend to the county teams themselves when the Sports Meet resumes in November,” he stressed.
BSA Secretary-General Stanley Trokon Horace thanked the Bassa Stakeholders Group for the donation and assured that the sporting materials would be fairly distributed among districts participating in the competition.
The Bassa Stakeholders Group reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with community institutions to promote unity, talent development and sporting excellence across Grand Bassa County.
The 2026 Grand Bassa County District League is scheduled to run from Sept. 6-13 at the Doris Williams Stadium in Buchanan, featuring both football and kickball competitions.
Participating teams are expected from Electoral District #1 Diahnblae, Electoral District #2 Glakon, Electoral District #3 Buchanan, Electoral District #4, Electoral District #5 Wee, Electoral District #5 Kpogba and Electoral District #6 Neekreen.
