President Joseph Boakai and his delegation arrived at the United Nations Complex in New York Tuesday morning, as nearly 130 Heads of State and Government gather in New York for the opening of the annual high-level debate.
This year’s General Debate is being held under the theme, “Restoring trust, managing transformation: a United Nations that delivers for all.” The debate brings together leaders to address major global challenges and runs from September 22 through September 28.
President Boakai’s arrival at the opening further signals Liberia’s participation in a week of high-level diplomatic engagements, including hosting events and bilateral meetings on issues ranging from women, peace and security to youth, climate change, development and international peace and security.
The Liberian leader is scheduled to deliver Liberia’s national statement to the General Assembly on Thursday, September 24.
Liberia’s presence at this year’s UN gathering also comes as the country serves as an elected member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2026–2027 term, giving Monrovia an additional platform in global discussions on international peace and security.
Meanwhile, yesterday’s opening session featured addresses from several world leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, as the international community begins a week of high-level diplomacy at the United Nations.
