President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., has appointed Maj/Gen Daniel D. Ziankahn (Rtd.), Jr., Military Advisor to the President, as Chairman of the ECOMOG Memorial Committee.

This committee is tasked with overseeing the design, location, cost, and timeline for the construction of a national memorial honoring the sacrifices of the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) in restoring peace and stability to Liberia.

In his Annual Message on January 27, 2025, President Boakai reaffirmed his commitment to recognizing the selfless service and ultimate sacrifices made by ECOMOG forces in preserving Liberia’s territorial integrity and unity during the country’s civil conflict. The memorial will serve as a lasting tribute to the brave men and women from ECOWAS member states who answered Liberia’s call in its time of greatest need.

The ECOMOG Memorial Committee includes:

1. Director General, General Services Agency (GSA)

2. President, Liberia Council of Churches

3. Head, National Muslim Council of Liberia

4. President, Liberian Institute of Architects

5. Chairman, Liberia Land Authority

6. Minister of Public Works

7. Minister of Finance and Development Planning

8. Minister of National Defense

9. Chairman, Senate Committee on National Defense, Security, Intelligence, and Veteran Affairs

10. Chairman, House Committee on National Security

11. President, William V. S. Tubman University

12. Mr. Joe Gene Mulbah, Advisor to the President on Infrastructure

Maj/Gen Ziankahn, a seasoned military officer, brings extensive experience to the role, having served as Liberia’s first post-civil war Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) for nearly a decade. He has played a significant role in ECOWAS military engagements, including participating in strategic planning for the ECOWAS Early Warning and Rapid Response Mechanism. Under his leadership, Liberia contributed to regional peacekeeping missions, including operations in Mali.

The Committee will work diligently to develop a fitting and enduring symbol of gratitude to ECOMOG for its invaluable role in Liberia’s peace process. Further details on the project’s progress will be communicated to the public in due course.
