Boakai Asserts Rule Of Law As House Impasse Persists Despite Supreme Court Decision

MONROVIA – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has acknowledged the ruling of the Supreme Court of Liberia on the legislative impasse gripping the House of Representatives but emphasized that the crisis remains unresolved, calling for national unity and calm as his administration seeks a constitutional solution.

In a national statement released on Thursday, April 24, 2025, President Boakai expressed deep concern over the protracted division in the House, which he said has eroded public trust and weakened one of the pillars of Liberia’s democracy. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to democratic principles and affirmed that the government would continue functioning despite the disruptions.

“The House of Representatives’ problem remains unresolved,” President Boakai stated, referencing the Court’s ruling on a Bill of Information concerning the ongoing stalemate. “My government has already initiated broad consultations with relevant national stakeholders to determine the most appropriate and constitutionally sound path forward.”

Boakai revealed that the government is engaging traditional and other national leaders in the consultation process and stressed that any solution must respect the Constitution and the doctrine of separation of powers.

Citing provisions on legislative quorums, Boakai said his administration will uphold the constitutional requirement necessary for the Legislature to conduct business. “We will continue to work with the quorum that will ensure the full functioning of our government,” he said.

The President also condemned recent attacks on public property, including the torching of the Capitol Building and reports of further vandalism, warning that such acts will not be tolerated. “Under my leadership, the government of Liberia will not be held hostage by narrow interests or acts of lawlessness,” he said. “Those who undermine peace, violate the law, or seek to disrupt national harmony will face the full force of the law and justice.”

He urged Liberians to remain peaceful and committed to democratic ideals, assuring citizens that the government remains stable and is working to ensure continued service delivery and national order.

President Boakai called on lawmakers and citizens alike to rise above division and remember their oath to the nation. “Liberia is bigger than any one person, party, or position,” he declared. “We will protect our democracy. We will preserve our peace. And together, we will move Liberia forward.”
