MONROVIA, LIBERIA – President Joseph Boakai has pledged to improve the living conditions of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL), instructing the Ministry of National Defense to begin immediate renovations on military barracks nationwide. Speaking at the 68th Armed Forces Day celebration on February 11, 2025, he acknowledged the dire state of many AFL facilities and vowed that his administration would take decisive action to address the longstanding neglect.
During the ceremony at the Barclay Training Center in Monrovia, President Boakai highlighted the struggles faced by soldiers due to deteriorating housing conditions. He directed Defense Minister Prince C. Johnson III to conduct a nationwide assessment of military installations, with a focus on barracks in Maryland, Nimba, and Bomi counties. Additionally, he reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to fully restoring the Todee Military Barracks, ensuring that troops have access to adequate living quarters and improved training environments.
The President reflected on the state of the military when he took office in January 2024, describing the situation as deeply concerning. Despite these challenges, he expressed optimism about ongoing efforts to modernize military infrastructure and equip AFL personnel with the resources needed to enhance their operational effectiveness.
The event was attended by several high-ranking officials and regional partners, including Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio. President Boakai emphasized the significance of regional security cooperation, commending the strong military ties between Liberia and its West African allies. He noted that international partnerships have played a key role in strengthening the AFL and bolstering the country’s defense capabilities.
As the government pushes forward with its military reforms, President Boakai assured AFL service members that their welfare remains a top priority. He stressed that a well-supported and properly housed military is essential to maintaining national security, stability, and overall defense readiness.
