President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has officially switched on the lights in Buchanan, marking a significant milestone in Liberia’s efforts to expand access to reliable electricity and accelerate development across the country.
The historic lighting ceremony, held last night, highlighted the progress of the €42 million European Union-funded Light Up South-East Liberia (LUSE) Programme, which is extending electricity access to hundreds of homes, businesses, healthcare facilities, schools, and public institutions in Buchanan ahead of Liberia’s 179th Independence Day celebration.
Implemented by the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning in partnership with the Rural and Renewable Energy Agency (RREA) and the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC), the project is transforming Buchanan’s urban landscape and supporting the city’s gradual transition toward improved and more reliable electricity access.
Newly installed streetlights are now illuminating major roads and public spaces across the city, while electricity connections continue to expand to residential communities, businesses, and public facilities.
The project represents a significant investment in Liberia’s energy infrastructure and is expected to contribute to economic growth, improve the delivery of essential public services, enhance public safety, and create new opportunities for communities in the southeast and other parts of the country.
The partnership between the European Union and the Government of Liberia underscores a shared commitment to sustainable development, expanded energy access, and inclusive economic growth.
The LUSE Programme forms part of broader efforts to strengthen Liberia’s energy sector and ensure that more Liberians benefit from reliable electricity as the country advances its development agenda.
