WASHINGTON, D.C., USA – Liberian President Joseph Nyuma Boakai on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, addressed the U.S.-African Leaders Summit held at the White House, where he joined four other African Heads of State in high-level talks with U.S. President Donald J. Trump. The summit focused on diplomacy, trade, security, and investment as part of a renewed push to deepen ties between the United States and key African nations.
In his address, President Boakai reaffirmed Liberia’s longstanding relationship with the United States and expressed appreciation for the enduring partnership between the two countries. “We recently celebrated your 249th Independence Anniversary at your Embassy in Monrovia, Mr. President. We thank you for the opportunity to be here today,” Boakai said. “Liberia has been a longstanding friend of the United States, and we believe in your vision of making America great again. Our partnership stretches far back, and we stand with you on economic diplomacy and commercial cooperation.”
The Liberian leader used the moment to spotlight Liberia’s untapped natural resources, particularly in the mineral sector. He called for greater collaboration and technical support from the United States in conducting a comprehensive mineral survey, which he described as critical for unlocking long-term economic benefits. “Liberia has vast mineral potential, and as a good and trusted friend, we are seeking support to conduct comprehensive mineral surveys. This is vital to unlocking sustainable growth and mutual economic benefits,” he said.
President Boakai also emphasized Liberia’s steady progress in peacebuilding and democratic governance, highlighting the country’s history of peaceful transitions and stability in a region often plagued by conflict. “We are fortunate to have enjoyed relative peace and democratic continuity. Our country is steadily cooling down after years of conflict, and we are proud of the democratic path we continue to follow,” he said.
He concluded his speech by calling for increased American engagement in Liberia’s broader development efforts, pointing to key areas such as infrastructure, security, and foreign investment. “We would like to see increased American investment in Liberia. We believe the United States can play a key role in advancing peace and security within our region, and we are committed to working closely with you in that regard,” Boakai stated.
The summit, described by analysts as a significant diplomatic step for the continent, offered African leaders a platform to articulate shared goals and build economic partnerships with Washington. President Boakai’s remarks highlighted Liberia’s readiness to play an active role in a future of strengthened U.S.-Africa cooperation.
