Today, Agriculture Minister Dr. J. Alexander Nuetah toured the Central Agricultural Research Institute (CARI) in Bong County to inspect the Cassava Breeder Seed Production program—a 13-hectare demonstration site where seven improved cassava varieties from Nigeria’s International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) are being tested for large-scale distribution.
Among these, the “Game Changer” variety stands out for its exceptionally high starch content, making it a key part of Liberia’s plan to establish a starch processing factory. Minister Nuetah expressed confidence in CARI’s efforts: “By July or August, we will begin harvesting the first set of these cuttings. Instead of immediate large-scale distribution, we will use them as foundation cuttings for farmers to multiply further.
The Ministry is moving from small scattered plots to large-scale production units so farmers can sell directly to processing facilities, increase their income, and contribute to Liberia’s economy.
Meanwhile, there’s Exciting News for Farmers!
A starch processing factory is under development in Weala, Margibi County! With equipment already shipped and land preparation ongoing, Minister Nuetah is hopeful: “By June this year, we expect the factory to be up and running. Now, the challenge is ensuring a steady supply of raw cassava. We are committed to linking farmers to this guaranteed market.”
Dr. Arthur Bob Karnuah, CARI’s Director General, emphasized the importance of quality seeds in increasing productivity: “Any successful agricultural production depends on access to quality, viable seeds. If you have the right seeds, you will succeed.”
This initiative seeks to ensure high-quality cassava seeds for Liberian farmers, boosting food security, exports, and farmer incomes.
Liberia’s agricultural transformation is underway!
Let’s grow together!
