The Cooperative Development Agency (CDA), over the weekend, celebrated the International Cooperative Day in Tubmanburg, Bomi County.

The event, which brought together cooperative development actors, entrepreneurs, and local farmers, aimed at expanding the cooperative sector of Liberia.

In the keynote address, Dr. Adam M. Kyne, Senior Advisor in the Office of the First Lady Hon. Katuma Y. Boakai, urges the government to expand its efforts to promote cooperatives beyond current initiatives.

Dr. Kyne suggested the introduction of cooperative education in universities, colleges, and secondary schools would significantly boost cooperative development in the region.

This move, according to Madam Boakai, Senior Advisor, would enable Liberia to reap more benefits from cooperative developments.

This year, International Cooperative Day (ICD), under the theme “Building Liberia through Cooperative Value Chain,” highlighted the critical role cooperatives play in Liberia’s economic development.

The event underscores the importance of cooperatives in promoting economic growth, social inclusion, and sustainable development in Liberia.

In her statement, Madam Lwopu Kandankai, Registered General of the Cooperative Development Agency (CDA), encouraged cooperatives in Bomi, Cape Mount, and Gbarpolu Counties to continue making the Western region a hub for cooperative development in Liberia.

She assured the government would continue to create an enabling environment for cooperatives, making the sector attractive for citizens and partners.

Meanwhile, as the country continues to work towards strengthening its cooperative sector, stakeholders are optimistic about the potential benefits that cooperatives can bring to local communities and the public at large.
