CDC Unveils Political Calendar

MONROVIA, Liberia, September 29, 2026 — The opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) has unveiled three major events on its political calendar, including its 2026 Martyrs Day observance, a Day of Prayer for Liberia and an Extraordinary National Convention scheduled for March 2027.

According to a release signed by CDC National Secretary-General Jefferson Tamba Koijee, the party will observe Martyrs Day from November 4 to 8 in Kinjor, Grand Cape Mount County, under the theme, “They Carried the Struggle, We Carry Their Legacy.”

The five-day observance is expected to feature prayers, a candlelight vigil, parade, sporting activities and an official commemorative program.

As part of the activities, the CDC said it will establish a National Roll of Fallen CDC Partisans to formally recognize party members and supporters whom the organization says made significant sacrifices during its political struggle.

Martyrs Day has traditionally been used by the CDC to remember members and supporters whom the party says suffered injuries, endured hardships or lost their lives in connection with its political activities.

The observance is also used by the party to reflect on its history, honor grassroots supporters and strengthen internal solidarity.

The CDC emerged as a major political force during the 2005 presidential election around the candidacy of former President George Manneh Weah. The party describes itself as a mass-based democratic movement committed to national unity, justice, equality and political participation.

Meanwhile, the CDC announced that former President Weah will dedicate his birthday in October to a Day of Prayer for Liberia, rather than holding a traditional birthday celebration.

According to the party, the prayer activities will focus on peace, the welfare of Liberians and the country’s future.

The CDC has also announced an Extraordinary National Convention in Maryland County from March 26 to 31, 2027.

The party said additional details about the convention, including its agenda and other arrangements, will be announced later.

The calendar comes as the former ruling party intensifies its political and organizational activities. In recent weeks, CDC officials have increased their public engagements, while the party has also participated in discussions with other opposition political leaders ahead of the 2029 elections.

The three events place remembrance, national prayer and internal party organization at the center of the CDC’s activities as it prepares for its next phase of political engagement.
