The Centrism Movement has expressed deep concern over the ongoing impasse at the University of Liberia, where the planned September resumption of classes has been stalled by a go-slow action from the Faculty Association in protest of funding shortages.
In a statement, Cllr. Kanio Bai Gbala, Chairperson of the Movement, described the UL “flagship institution of higher learning” and warned that continued disruptions carry far-reaching consequences for thousands of students, their families, and the wider society.
The Centrism Movement is therefore calling for immediate and constructive dialogue between the University Administration and the Faculty Association, stressing that genuine engagement, mutual respect, and compromise are essential to resolving the crisis.
Cllr. Gbala craved all parties to remain calm and act with restraint: “We appeal to the University Administration, the Faculty Association, and the student body to exercise tact, calm, and emotional intelligence at this critical juncture. The credibility of our national university and the future of Liberia’s young people depend on a peaceful, responsible resolution of this matter.”
The group also appealed directly to students to remain law-abiding and nonviolent while the matter is being addressed. While acknowledging their frustration, the Movement cautioned that violence or disorderly conduct would only undermine their cause and put their safety—as well as the university’s reputation—at risk.
Reaffirming its commitment, the Centrism Movement said it stands ready to support any mediation effort that prioritizes students’ interests, addresses faculty concerns, and safeguards the University of Liberia’s role as a “national beacon of learning and development.”
